Superb post. You prove that translation requires "failure" (as in a perhaps different sense poetry does), but the failure is in the service of a greater good, communication against the odds. I suppose that is what the translator must tell herself. This reader admires your scrupulousness in, for example, justifying the addition of "living" in "The beauty of spinach is weak – / when we face the mere fifty square meters / of standard living space," etc. The justification is total. (Thank you for explaining.) And the repeated m's and r's in "the mere fifty square meters" delight the ear.
