American Gamelan Institute, run by the gamelan scholar, composer and musician Jody Diamond, is "an organization devoted to publishing, recording, distributing, and making available information on all aspects of Indonesian performing arts and their international counterparts." My own favorite gamelan performer is Nyi Tjondroelokito, who died some years ago, and anyone who is interested in the music of Indonesia should check these two rare performances out. Barbara Benary's Gamelan Son of Lion is also a wonderful orchestra working to make modern, western music for gamelan. And almost any music by Lou Harrison is beautiful...
