The new APR (July / August 2012) also has stunning work by poets Catherine Barnett, Elaine Equi, and Dara Wier. The issue, whether by design or not, has compelling evidence of the vitality of the short poem. Brevity appears to be the soul not only of wit and lingerie but of Erato, the muse of the lyric, as well. Add Henri Michaux to the mix and you've got an issue to remember. Here is Sherman's poem, "Curse # 7." -- DL
Today, I saw
A red car
Make an illegal left
And almost hit
A blue car
Running a red.
The drivers, suddenly
Angry survivors,
Braked hard, threw
Open their doors,
Jumped into the street,
And pummeled
Each other.
From this day
Forward, I want
You to be
Both of those
Assholes,
Simultaneously.
-- Sherman Alexie
