Allison Klein and Michelle Paul, both of Brooklyn, who entered this fine ditty in last week's Time Out New York bagel limerick contest:
There was a young woman who boasted,
“At all the brunch parties I’ve hosted,
no omelettes or tea
have been served by me—
just plain, poppy and sesame: toasted!”
Of the winning entry, judge David Lehman said, "I like this one because it has the greatest variety of bagels, and I too like mine toasted. Who would have predicted one hundred years ago that the bagel of NYC would conquer American gastronomy? But it has done so. It has kicked ass. Congratulations."
Upon reading the many entries, Lehman was inspired to write:
A German philosopher named Hegel
Made eye contact with a sea gull:
He brought her bread,
Which she ate and felt well fed.
But Hegel held out for a bagel.
