I'm loving Tynan Davis's posts this week so I want to take a minute to talk about how we met. Last November David and I traveled to Boston where David was to participate in a major event in connection with A Fine Romance: Jewish Songwriters, American Songs. He's been around the world with this book but the Boston event, a "presentation with musical illustrations," would be the most ambitious program yet. The New Center for Arts & Culture had booked him into the 600+ seat Paramount Theater and enlisted the Boston Musical Theater to perform a dozen or so of the songs David highlights in his book. It was going to be BIG!
The evening was an enormous success. After an elegant cocktail party, during which David signed books (and I drank champagne and ate hors d'oeuvres), David played to a sold-out house. The Boston Musical Theater -- four vocalists plus piano, bass, and drums -- put on a stellar show. I'll not soon forget Tynan's performance of "Come Rain or Come Shine" (Harold Arlen/Johnny Mercer). Damn, she put that song over like nobody's business!
You can find pictures of the event here. I'm told we'll be able to post a video soon.
After the final encore, we repaired to a nearby restaurant for a celebratory toast. Tynan joined us and it was then that we had a chance to talk. One thing led to another and here she is, lucky for us!
