We love poetry, we love cocktails, we love cocktails inspired by poetry. Would this poem inspire you to make a cocktail?:
I Feel Horrible. She Doesn't *
I feel horrible. She doesn't
love me and I wander around
like a sewing machine
that's just finished sewing
a turd to a garbage can lid.
-- Richard Brautigan
To celebrate National you-know-what (hint: April), the acclaimed East Village restaurant Back 40 is hosting a poetry slam, for which it has enlisted some of New York's most inventive chemists to create cocktails inspired by their favorite poetry. The great slam impresario, poet Bob Holman will raise each glass and conjure the poem that inspired its contents. Ashbery, Bukowski, Neruda, Stein, Yeats, and the mother of April as we know it Mr. Eliot himself, will all be there in spirit(s).
$55 includes drinks and snacks from Back 40's talented kitchen poets. (Ed note: I've dined at Back 40 and its sister resto Savoy. The food is outstanding! And owner Peter Hoffman is a long-time supporter of New York's poetry scene.) Find more information here. Call now for your reservation: 212-388-1990.
To tickle your palate, here's a recipe for the Innisfree by Savoy's mixologist Alex Mirkin:
Savoy’s “Innisfree”
2 ounces mead
1 ounce Irish whiskey
1/2 ounce New York honey
1/2 ounce elderflower liqueur
1/2 ounce lemon juice
Splash of Doc’s hard cider
Combine the first five ingredients in a cocktail shaker, shake vigorously, strain, pour over an ice-filled Collins glass, then top with hard cider.
*I Feel Horrible, She Doesn't inspired "The Wicked Kiss" by Mayahuel's Phil Ward.
