A tip of the fedora to Maxine Sullivan (1911-1987), the wonderful jazz singer, on the 100th anniversarty of her birth on Friday, May 13. . . .and to tireless Phil Schaap of WKCR-FM, a talking encyclopedia of jazz, who devoted an hour to Maxine yesterday (with a play-list including "Loch Lomond," ":I Camn't Get Started," "Skylark," "Come Rain or Come Shine," "Summertime," "I Must Love That Man," and an Arlen-Mercer tune new to me, "Legitimize My Name"). . .and to poet Charles North, who phoned us at 7:44 PM to alert us to Schaap's show. . .and to Sidney Bechet who was born yesterday. -- DL
