On Tuesday, May 6, The American Scholar will launch a website experiment in writing crowd-sourced poetry—in this case, a Shakespearean sonnet.
Our own David Lehman, the series editor for The Best American Poetry volumes, has provided the first line for the sonnet, and will solicit a new line from our web audience each week. Lehman will pick finalists and a winner on the subsequent week, and readers will be encouraged to comment on his choice of the winning line.
Please join us for what we hope will be an amusing and enlightening poetic undertaking, and encourage all the poets and would-be poets you know to try their hand at “Next Line, Please.”
Lehman’s first line:
How like a prison is my cubicle
Look for Lehman’s introduction and our instructions on Tuesday, May 6, at:

And remember to check back each Tuesday to watch the sonnet grow.
