It's so easy to be wrong. But there are elements of truth in each bad review - sort of. In a way it was intellectual slumming to draw upon Puerto Rican experience. Did anyone know anything about Puerto Ricans (I don't know but suspect not)? Were there any Puerto Rican advisors to let them know what the culture was really like? Anyone really know about early salsa? Probably not, but WSS is still one of my favorites, still one of the greatest shows ever. Great doesn't mean without flaws or limitations. Try teaching Tom Sawyer on an Indian reservation. It's tough. Enough rambling.

Thank you for the comment, Hilton. One thing I can say with complete confidence is that Bernstein knew and loved Latin rhythms and incorporated in his music in "Wonderful Town" and other pieces.
