In the Golden Age gods walked among us
Until Olympus levitated beyond sight and,
Hopeless of looking up, we began looking
Down into quantum realms of tiny or
Even theoretical particles whose reality,
So to speak, is neither here nor there.
But to God there is no zero, as we learn
At the end of The Incredible Shrinking Man,
A film in which a guy keeps getting smaller
Because of a mysterious radioactive cloud.
A poignant allegory of our shared destiny
Is that cloud! Plus the guy has battles with
A cat and a spider but finally he’s so small
That he’s okay with getting even smaller.
