howard cosell..,"I was right to back Muhammad Ali, but it caused me major enmity in many areas of this nation."

Howard Cosell -- now there's a name to reckon with. I believe Norton is publishing this fall a new bio of Ali's famous collaborator, the contentious co-host of Monday Night Football, the journalist with the voice of a naval officer as counsel for the defense in a court-martial.

Dear DL: "The Sweet Science" has also long been my favorite piece of sports writing. Doug Lang turned me on to it many decades ago & I loved it. I think Mailer's book, "The Fight," on the Ali-Foreman African extravaganza, is my favorite by him. But maybe it's just that boxing makes for such exciting subject matter. William Hazlitt's great 1822 essay, also called "The Fight," should be remembered too---it's like early "New Journalism," and still fun to read: "Reader, have you ever seen a fight? If not, you have a pleasure to come, at least if it is a fight like that between the Gas-man [Tom Hickman] and Bill Neate." Anyway, thanks for recalling AJL.

Love those photo capture. Thanks for sharing the article. Hope to hear it for this years sports. :D
