Mr. Singer is right on all counts. I was fortunate to see Max Roach any number of times, most recently --two years before his death, I believe-- in Hanover, NH of all places. Not only were his unusual meters a fascination, but his capacity to make a drum kit into a seemingly MELODIC device was also even more so. A man of genius, dignity, and originality. Would that he were still with us!

Thanks for the piece on Max Roach. It was always my understanding, however, that Kenny Clarke (b. 1914, ten years earlier than Roach) was the one who found a way to "shift the pulse of drums from the bass drum to the ride cymbal." Or as Wikipedia has it, Clarke, "A major innovator of the bebop style of drumming . . . pioneered the use of the Ride cymbal to keep time rather than the hi-hat, along with the use of the bass drum for irregular accents ('dropping bombs')." Whoever patented the technique, I'll never forget the hours when I first heard the thrilling Bird recordings that featured Max on drums.
