One of Ira Gershwin's greatest lyrics:
"They're writing songs of love, / But not for me. . ."
"With love to lead the way, / I've found more clouds of gray / than any Russian play / could guarantee. . ."
"I was a fool to fall and get that way / hi ho alas and also lackaday."
"It all began so well, but what an end. / This is the time a fellow need a friend, / When every happy plot / Ends in a marriage know, / and there's no knot for me."
We're so glad that you remembered Ira Gershwin on the date of his birth. We've had ELLA FITZGERALD SINGS THE GEORGE AND IRA GERSHWIN SONGBOOK blasting through the stereo. Let's all hear it for Israel Gershowitz!

I neglected to say that Ella Fitzgerald's three-record set of the Gershwins' songs (arranged by Nelson Riddle, I believe) is the best recording here is of the Gershwin songbook. -- DL
