JB was such a kind and gracious man. During his confirmation presentation at our synagogue, my son read an excerpt from JB's 1969 address to medical students entitled "Present Day Thoughts on the Quality of Life." I sent a copy of my son's speech to JB, who quickly wrote a beautiful note in reply--using, of course, his Waterman fountain pen. JB also replied to other correspondence--always by hand and unfailingly polite and informative. JB did not, of course, have to do any of this. For all his erudition and accomplishments, he retained the old school and old world gentility and decorum which is all to rare today. I have his correspondence in a safe place. I cherish it, and will always remember his kindness.
