Sara Daniele Rivera’s debut collection The Blue Mimes was just published by Graywolf Press as the winner of the Academy of American Poets’ 2023 First Book Award. Rivera is a Cuban Peruvian American poet whose landscapes include Havana and Lima, the sea and the mountains. Her gestures include code-switching and rompecabezas/ puzzles to get at the terrifying heart of her subjects. In these lush and powerful poems, she faces the geopolitical realities of migration , the 2016 election, and mourns the loss of those taken by Covid-19. The Blue Mimes is a tour-de-force.
