What a great way to start a new season, David. Thanks for reprinting this.

One summer in the 90s, Michael Peich of West Chester Univesity and Aralia Press, took Mark Jarman and me to a Phillies game against the Dodgers. As a pre-game treat, he walked us up to the home team's press box to meet his friend, the Phillies icon and announcer, Richie Ashburn. Richie, warm and garrulous, looked like he could still hit .300. When Mike told him that Mark and I were originally from Los Angeles and loved Vin Scully and the Dodgers, Richie said, "Do you wanna meet him? He's right next door. C'mon!" Unsteady, we shyly followed him into the Dodgers press box. "Hey, Vin!" Richie said. "I got two poets from L.A. who wanna meet you!"

The redhead swiveled in his chair, stood up, and gave us a dazzling smile. We shook hands. We touched him! "Hi, fellas! I love poetry. What are two poets from L.A. doing in Philadelphia?" We stammered. We said we were there for a conference. Mark managed to tell him how much he meant to us, from childhood on, as a mentor, a storyteller, a voice, and a lyricist. He thanked us, telling us how grateful he was to hear that. The game was about to begin and we had to go. We staggered out to the hall and somehow made our way down to our seats. "He's our Yeats," one of us said (I can't remember which).

Weeks later, I sent my latest book of poetry to Vin in care of Dodger Stadium. I doubted it would reach him, but a month later I received in the mail an envelope bearing the name and home address of Vin Scully. Inside was a note handwritten in beautiful Dodger blue ink. He thanked me for the book. He said he'd read the poems and enjoyed them, saying again how much he loved poetry. He signed it, "Your friend, Vin." No critic's approval has ever meant more to me. What a good and gracious man!

What a wonderful story, Robert. Thank you for posting ti!

Every spring an Angell is born. Great post, great story from Robert.
